ABOUT THE ALLENTOWN AREA

The largest city in the Lehigh Valley Metropolitan region, Allentown is a fast-growing city of 118,000. Known for its many parks, Allentown is perhaps most famous for its role in the Revolutionary war, when the city was used to hide the Liberty Bell from the British. In 2016, the Urban Land Institute declared Allentown's downtown redevelopment project a national success story. WoodSpring’s extended stay hotels in the region include one in Allentown itself, one in Bethlehem, and one in Wilkes-Barre.

Allentown is served by two international airports: the Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP). The city is fifty miles northwest of Philadelphia, ninety miles from New York City, and only fifteen miles west of the New Jersey state line. Allentown satellite cities and suburbs include Bethlehem, Wilkes-Barre, Bath, Nazareth, Old Orchard, West Easton, Wilson, Easton, Glendon, Trexlertown, Harding, Scranton, and Taylor.

Allenton is home to a number of corporate headquarters, including Crayola, PPL, and Air Products and Chemicals. The economy once focused on steel mills and manufacturing and has shifted to the service industries in recent years. The Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network is the region’s largest employer.

Allentown offers a mix of historic and modern attractions to visitors and residents alike. Discover how the Liberty Bell was hidden at the Liberty Bell Museum, or explore the valley’s history at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum. Spend a day shooting down the waterslides at the Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom or watch Murphy, a fifteen-foot-tall Masai giraffe, “paint” at the Lehigh Valley Zoo. Allentown’s network of parks and trails offer plenty of opportunities for nature lovers, while shoppers find plenty to enjoy at the Wyoming Valley Mall.

Allentown has three sports teams of note: the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA), the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL), and the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, an indoor football team. The city is home to the Parkettes National Gymnastics Training Center, where many Olympic stars have trained, and plays host once a year to the Collegiate Marching Band Festival. The town boasts a diverse ethnic and cultural mix, with a Hispanic population of approximately 43 percent.

Allentown has a typically Pennsylvanian weather pattern. Summers are hot, with an average temperature around 73℉. Spring and fall are usually mild, but winter days typically see temperatures of 27℉ or lower. January and February bring the most snow, with rainfall common throughout the year.
